First Home League Win....
South Brent 143 all out (33.2 overs)
Chagford 3rds 78 all out (36 overs)
Choosing to bat first, Brent found the overcast conditions tough, with regular wickets always checking their progress as Jarvis, Lannin and Malpas all fell.
Lewis (21) began to steady the ship but when he and Wilson (0) went, Brent were 52-5 and in a sticky spot against the league’s bottom side. Chris Daniel’s 39 nudged the score over 100 and then an important 26 from Matt Dardis, pushed the side past the third batting bonus point - both batsmen being well supported by John Cranch at the other end.
The tail didn’t wag, as the innings ended in a similar fashion to the previous home league game with 3 successive ducks leaving Brent all out for 143 with 11.4 overs unused.
Chagford opted to put Brent under pressure by opting to bat for 10 overs before tea in what turned out to be a pivotal part of the match. Cook and Willoughby bowled tight lines and were well supported by a dynamic field to leave the visitors 10-2 and needing them to score at a boundary an over after tea.
Wickets fell regularly, with only one opposition batsman reaching double figures – indeed the highest scorer in the innings was extras! Notable performances with the ball included Cook with 2-8 from 9 overs, including 4 maidens and Willoughby’s 3-17. Dave Wilson took a catch of the season contender with one hand above his head as the match drew to a close, then sharp work from keeper Dardid stumped the final batsmen to end the Chagford innings on 78.
Not a classic, but a 65 run win for Brent in a game where inexperienced bowlers were able to get some overs in meant a satisfactory days work!
