Match Played at Shaldon CC
Report by Dave Lewis
The first game for the newly reinstated South Brent CC was against a touring side from Hampshire. They had arranged to play Shaldon Optimists but the match was going to be the morning after their annual prize giving night, which meant many of their players were unfit for duty.
The fixture was arranged at the last minute and captain Pete Glen did an amazing job to get a team together, we took seven from SBCC and Shaldon Optimists loaned us three.
St Mary Bourne batted first and some tight bowling from Pete Glen and one of the young Shaldon players kept the score down. Pete took a couple of early wickets and we were in a good position at 103 for 3. The St Mary Bourne no.4 started to exploit the gaps in the field with some big hits and quickly moved the score on. Brent managed to keep taking wickets but couldn’t dislodge the no.4 who eventually went on to score 113 not out. The final score was an impressive 283 for 8 off 35 overs, with most of the Brent bowlers taking a wicket (even John Cranch who sprained his ankle on his wicket taking delivery).
Brent went into bat not holding out much hope of reaching the St Mary Bourne score. We got off to a bad start losing our experienced opener John Cranch in the second over. We managed to get back on track by taking advantage of some slow bowlers and quickly raced to 99 for 1. Dylan Humphrey from Shaldon got an excellent 52 but was bowled by some faster bowling. Brent then lost a few quick wickets, Dave Lewis was caught out on 52 and we lost 5 wickets for only 15 runs. Dominic Prosser and Pete Glen put on an impressive stand to take us up over the 200 mark. Unfortunately Dominic was given out LBW on 48 and Brent were left needing 75 to win. A defiant last wicket stand by Seamus Prosser and Tim Lannin was ended with Brent on 226 all out.
Overall the team were pleased with the performance as we only had ten men in the field, and are looking forward to our next game.
